What is Proton Therapy?

Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy that uses a single beam of high-energy protons to treat various forms of cancer. Just as with conventional radiation therapy, proton therapy treats tumors by directing radiation into the tumor site where doses of radiation destroy cancerous cells.

Proton therapy kills the cancer and spares the healthy tissue. Proton therapy limits negative side effects such as skin burns, fatigue and impact to bodily finctions that are a routine part of conventional radiation treatment.

Proton Therapy is not new or experimental. Proton Therapy has been FDA Approved since 1988, Medicare and Medicaid approves since 2000 and has treated over 1,00,00 cancer patients in centers in the U.S., Europe and Asia, since the mid-1950’s.

James R. Gray, MD, Medical Director, Provision CARES Proton Therapy Nashville

James Gray, MD has been affiliated with Provision Healthcare for several years and has treated patients at Provision CARES Proton Therapy Knoxville, a member of the Provision CARES Cancer Network. He will continue the advancement of proton therapy, with the ProNova SC360 proton system as Medical Director at the Provision CARES Proton Therapy Nashville, the newest member of the Provision CARES Cancer Network. He is honored to serve patients as the medical director of the first advanced intensity modulated pencil-beam proton therapy system with fully integrated image-guided equipment; and proud that it was conceived, designed, tested and manufactured in his home state of Tennessee, with valuable clinical input to the research and development.
